Background & History

Serna Elementary School and its principal, Jeff Price, were key collaborative partners with Church of Reconciliation in beginning this transformation tutoring program. Rec members Art Ramseur and Larry Wynn met with Mr. Price in early December 2011 to discuss the needs of the 600 students at Serna Elementary School.  Some of his insights which point to the needs of the students and families were:

  • Serna had 614 students almost 100 plus from same time last year.
  • 60% of the Serna students lived in apartments.
  • 80% of the student body were in the lowest socio-economic category.
  • Serna Elementary was experiencing a 97% student body mobility from year to year, meaning 97% of the students who started the year were not there at the end of the year for various reasons.
  • Most of the discipline problems were coming from students and families south of 410.
  • In 2011 there was no partner in the Serna Elementary catchment area to create a mentoring/tutoring program.

The unprecedented pandemic, created an even greater gap for those students living in the Community. Food insecurity grew as did the number of students and children struggling to maintain their grade level and educational requirements. We partnered with Excel Beyond the Bell and UpPartnership with the City of San Antonio to advocate on behalf of the Youth of Bexar County and to expand our efforts to include High Impact Tutoring and other programs to help with the critical issue. We started the Barrington Neighbors Creative HeARTS Programs to provide a hot, healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks along with creative, age appropriate, hands on Arts Projects (includes painting, drawing, collage, art history, reading, music, etc) All FREE to the participants during the critical Out of School Time , when meals are not prrovided. We welcome your support and donations to be able to continue our efforts.
